I have just completed one week on Sable Island (Nova Scotia) as part of my work as a research zoologist/photographer. I had intended to create a blog during my stay, with images, but we have had issues with the internet. So, I am going to create the blog post-trip. Here is day seven.

This was a good day for letting the science go and doing a bit of photography. There were some harbour seals hauled out on the beach that I noticed while driving home, so I decided to stop and take a look. I grabbed my large lens and crawled on my belly right up to one of them. Then I just observed them. The images below are the result of this shoot. It was a good practice in not labelling the subject. If I lay there on the damp sand and look at these magnificent beasts and focus on simply looking without the label of ‘seal’, then I might see more than just a seal. Perhaps its a little like turning a canvas upside down while painting or drawing so you are no longer seeing something familiar and can focus more on lines, textures etc.
