14 days on Sable Island: Day 13

A quiet day. The weather kept us from doing any seal catching: we had rain most of the day. I spent my time inside looking at data and writing a science paper, while the others modified a building to house a new generator and fuel. So, no photographs…

This map shows where the six seals we have caught are hanging out. Three are on or close to the island, while the other three are out at sea, likely foraging. Eventually, they will travel much further from the Island. Grey seals are not particularly deep diving, usually diving to ~40 m or so, but can certainly reach +250 m. They like to forage on shallow offshore banks, such as Sable Island Bank and eat forage fish, so small fat rich fish such as capelin, herring and sand lance.
