14 days on Sable Island, 2014: day eight

Over the past few days the weather has changed from warm and sunny to cool, rain and fog. Fortunately today, the weather looks like we are back to the warm and sunny, for now anyway. The heavy rain was of course good for the island, with the pond in front of the light keeper’s house partially filled back in. I am sure the various birds and horses are very happy with the surplus of freshwater.

The tour operator Adventure Canada brought people ashore yesterday. It was very interesting to watch their operation. The ship is equipped with ten zodiacs that zip back and forth to shore with people. Four people dressed in dry suits receive the boat as it approaches the beach and pulls it ashore.Lucky for them, the cruise has landed people on the island three days in a row so the passengers are very happy.

This year was the first visit to the island by the tour operator Adventure Canada. You can see the zodiacs leaving the ship heading toward the beach.

Today we are hoping to catch a few more seals to deploy satellite transmitters on, and our resupply ship, the Dominion Victory has arrived so we expect to be moving gear ashore today once the surf calms down. Sometimes the surf here gets very excited…
